The issues keep on arising for the Civil Engineering Diploma students who have difficulties understanding complex physics concepts and lead to a misconception of technical content in fluid mechanics through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) platform. Most of the students have a varying conceptual understanding due to difficulties adapting the fluid mechanics concept in their daily lives. This study is to identify the students' conceptual understanding levels of fluid mechanics using a diagnostic assessment. The diagnostic assessment refers to a test given at the early course to help the lecturer identify the problems faced by their students regarding the conceptual understanding level of physics concepts. The result obtained from the distributed diagnostic assessment question is analyzed to achieve this objective. The question provided is in a proportional statement and asked for an explanation based on their understanding. In conclusion, this study's finding allows the lecturer to design a suitable corrective plan, which assists the lecturers in correcting their errors to achieve excellent results.
2022-10-15T00:00:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://gadingssuitm.bioenvuitm.com/index.php/gadingss/article/view/351 THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSESSMENT TOOL IN BUILT ENVIRONMENT: HERITAGE BUILDING 2022-11-14T13:00:33+00:00 Hasni Suryani Mat Hasan hasni415@uitm.edu.my Lilawati Ab Wahab hasni415@uitm.edu.my Dzulkarnaen Ismail hasni415@uitm.edu.my Puteri Rohani Megat Abdul Rahim hasni415@uitm.edu.my Hasni Suhana Mat Hasan hasni415@uitm.edu.my
Assessment is a technique for evaluating a building performance or output using a set of criteria or indicators. In the built environment, there are several assessments to conserve heritage buildings that have been started by the government. These evaluations are diverse from one another and serve different purposes during the planning, starting, middle, and end phases of construction or conservation. The value of the building and its performance are evaluated as part of the assessments of the built environment. The objective of the study is to identify the characteristics of assessments tool in built environment, focusing on heritage building. In order to achieve the objective, the data was obtained from previous literature including journal and thesis. The findings reveal that the characteristics of assessments in the built environment focus solely on descriptive assessments rather than numerical assessments. In contrast to descriptive assessments, parameter produces more precise data on performance value and is easier to control. This study also found that the assessments focus on the threats, significance, or impacts of properties that collectively comprise the 'historic' values, as well as a heavy emphasis on the sustainability, performance, and condition of each individual building unit. The outcome of the study is hoped to be future reference for the organizations or individuals interested in assessment rating tool in the built environment focusing on heritage building.

2022-10-15T00:00:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://gadingssuitm.bioenvuitm.com/index.php/gadingss/article/view/322 THE EFFECT OF INTRALINGUAL SUBTITLED VIDEO IN LEARNING THE MEANING OF TARGETED ENGLISH VOCABULARIES IN MALAYSIAN ESL SECONDARY SCHOOL CONTEXT 2022-11-14T12:34:19+00:00 Farahiya Zalikha Zakaria farahiya@uitm.edu.my Mohd Azri Abd Jalil farahiya@uitm.edu.my
Audiovisual materials enhanced with captions or subtitles have long been regarded as a great pedagogical tool to enhance various aspects of language learning such as listening comprehension, oral skills, grammar, and vocabulary. Due to the notable potential of subtitled videos in assisting language learners, the current research takes interest on investigating the extent of intralingual subtitled video in helping ESL students to learn the meaning of the targeted English vocabularies. Underpinned by Paivio’s dual-coding theory and Krashen’s Input Hypothesis, intralingual subtitled video becomes a comprehensive input with multiple modalities that stimulate a viewer’s information processing system to facilitate better memory retention and ensure recognition of meanings and form of vocabularies. This research employs pre-test and post-test vocabulary quizzes, open-ended questionnaires, and email questionnaires to elicit the data required from 30 ESL Form 2 students of a secondary school in Melaka, Malaysia. Findings indicate that intralingual subtitled video do help participants to learn the meaning of the targeted English vocabularies due to the availability of pictorial cues, textual cues and audio to help participants to establish words’ meanings. This study offers ESL learners and educators a reference in utilising a multimedia tool that suits the needs and interest of learners as well as initiating a potential solution to solve vocabulary-learning issues diagnosed in classrooms.
2022-11-14T12:05:49+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://gadingssuitm.bioenvuitm.com/index.php/gadingss/article/view/298 DO FIRM AND BOARD CHARACTERISTICS AFFECT FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE? 2022-11-14T12:34:19+00:00 Radziah Mahmud radzi132@uitm.edu.my Nor Khadijah Mohd Azhari radzi132@uitm.edu.my Nur Mimi Najihah Ghazali radzi132@uitm.edu.my
Due to the acceleration of corporate fraud, misdemeanours, negligence, and immense loss of shareholders’ investment, the concerns about the firm and board attributes have captivated people’s interest, mainly due to the corporate scandals affecting various worldwide corporations. Weak corporate governance policies ultimately result in the collapse of businesses. The issue highlights the need for a better understanding of the impact of corporate governance on corporate performance. Thus, this study aims to examine how firm characteristics (leverage, liquidity) and board characteristics (board size, board independence, gender diversity, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) duality) affect a firm’s financial performance in a sample of listed companies from Bursa Malaysia. The data were collected from 137 listed companies in the main market from 2017 to 2019. The results suggest that liquidity positively affects firm performance measured by Return on Asset (ROA), while leverage has a significantly negative effect on firm financial performance. Contradictory to the agency theory, the board size, board independence, gender diversity and CEO duality do not affect the firm financial performance. This study contributes to the current debate on the effect of firm and board characteristics on a firm’s financial performance. The findings may also provide insight to investors and regulators.
2022-11-14T12:16:42+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://gadingssuitm.bioenvuitm.com/index.php/gadingss/article/view/367 AN OVERVIEW OF UTILIZING SHORT VIDEO ON SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM AS T&L TOOL DURING ODL: CASE STUDY OF DIPLOMA CIVIL ENGINEERING STUDENTS 2022-11-14T12:34:20+00:00 Haslin Idayu Amaruddin haslinidayu@uitm.edu.my Siti Hawa Rosli haslinidayu@uitm.edu.my
Social media like YouTube has been used globally by teachers and educators for open distance learning (ODL) during pandemic COVID19. Most teachers upload lecture videos on YouTube for easy access. The video's duration is generally long up to 15 minutes or more. Creating short video (60 seconds) content is one of the benefits of emerging technology in the digital era. Nowadays, there are a lot of applications available to help social media users to create interactive video content. By creating a short video on Tik Tok or YouTube as an alternative to recorded lecture videos, educators can create an interesting learning environment to enhance students’ performance. This study tended to create an overview of how a short video helps Civil Engineering diploma students to remember basic theories in Reinforced Concrete (RC) Design. RC Design course involved a lot of formulas and calculations. A mistake in the theories will cause wrong design solutions. Three groups of students participated in this study. These three groups are under the same lecturer to eliminate the factors that influence the performance of the students based on the lecturer's method of delivery. In this study, students were provided with short videos on the theories of RC Design. A questionnaire was then distributed to students to obtain their perception on the use of short video contents as learning tools. The results show that short videos are reliable tools in delivering a technical course in engineering education.
2022-10-15T00:00:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement##
